Itchen Valley Sixth Form College 2024 Prospectus
concept and copy
The sixth form college was looking for an update to its prospectus and I was asked to provide two proposals. This became the selected route. I considered what the college was offering and its target audience – who are young and finding their way – so the concept takes on a topographical visual with waypoint markers identifying the career routes the college can help them explore. The language used helps show that the teaching staff are expert guides, not teachers, and are there for the students to help them on their journey from A, to whatever they want to Be.

Bid Document – page layout
While the identity was created by North Design, the guidelines only described the use of the logo and typeface in promotional campaigns – bill boards and one off messaging – there was no suggestion of how the branding would be applied to more in depth collateral. I was tasked with designing and artworking the eighty-six page bid document.
Essentially a creative artworking project, the outcome displays good page layout, effective use of type and imagery allowing each page to breath. Body copy obscured for confidential reasons.
Soul Cellar
identity design
When local Swedish music producer, Frederik Erkander announced that he was good friends with Eddie Piller of Acid Jazz fame, and that there was interest in running a spin off music night as part of the Alresford Music Festival, I was asked to come up with an identity to help set the tone of this new music event.
Set in the undercroft of a local hotel/public house, the Soul Cellar was the perfect name. Referencing 1960s graphics, the result is an immediately recognisable and fun introduction to a good night out. The music producer and his Northern Soul line up feature in retro headshots with a nod to vintage cut and paste layout.
A fun retro vibe gives standout while the layering up of colourful graphics and type offers a lot for the beholder to digest but not in a negative way. It suggests that there’s a lot on offer. The Swan Hotel logo was a separate design job I also created.
Billy Goat
identity refresh
A high street business requested a review of their identity for their children’s shoe shop.
The existing logo featured a strong graphic of a goat surrounded by a bold key-line with a poorly executed type beneath in a mucky colour. I introduced a surface for the goat to stand on which adds strength and relevance – it’s all about contact with the earth.
The typeface Omnipop Sans Regular is informal and relaxed but makes for a strong graphic simultaneously complementing the logo.
I also created the strapline which gives sufficient clues as to the service and hints at the customers being confident and successful, or that the shoes you buy here will make you that way.
before and after
The project encompasses a full creative approach combining typography, graphic thought and copywriting. The result is a stronger brand with more impact that communicates the product/service on offer with a proposal for customer facing messaging thrown in too.
Pension Man
identity design
Stuart Trow, AKA PensionMan, is an economist passionate about educating people about the world of pensions and retirement related financial investing. He offers technical expertise relating to financial legislation via a podcast.
I was asked to create an identity that helped communicate a professional service that wasn’t all about commission and selling, but instead was a smart and friendly, ‘on your side’, completely independent advisory service.
Surveyors to Education
identity refresh
before and after
The outcome is a sympathetic re-execution of the existing design enhanced by the addition of the isometric grid. This compliments both the identity and the core element of the business, i.e, construction and planning. It suggests that S2e can be the cornerstone of your Schools/MATs future.
